What to expect

Located on the River Swale, Richmond Falls is a series of natural cascades that have played an important role in the town’s history for centuries. The powerful flow of the river helped support local industries, with nearby mills once using the water’s energy for production. Today, the falls provide a peaceful setting where visitors can enjoy the sound of rushing water and views of the surrounding riverside landscape.

The falls are easily accessible from Richmond town centre and form part of a wider network of riverside walks. A stroll along the river reveals woodland, historic buildings and views towards Richmond Castle, creating a lovely contrast between the town’s medieval heritage and its natural surroundings.

While smaller than some of Yorkshire’s famous waterfalls, Richmond Falls has a unique charm thanks to its location within a historic market town. It offers visitors the chance to experience nature without travelling far from Richmond’s cafés, shops and attractions.

We’ve found Richmond Falls to be a perfect addition to a visit to the town. It may not require a full day trip on its own, but combined with Richmond’s castle, historic streets and riverside paths, it creates a wonderful Yorkshire experience.
