Historic Places
The Peak District is home to a rich collection of historic places, from grand country estates and medieval ruins to ancient settlements and centuries-old landmarks that help tell the story of the region’s past.
Scattered across valleys, villages and rolling hills, these locations offer an opportunity to explore the culture and heritage that have shaped the landscape over generations.
Whether visiting a historic hall, wandering through the remains of a former industrial site or discovering a landmark hidden in the hills, these places provide a fascinating connection between the Peak District’s natural beauty and its human history.
Exploring Historic Places In The Peak District
Historic places in the Peak District often sit within some of the region’s most beautiful landscapes, where history and nature combine to create memorable places to explore. From stately homes surrounded by parkland to ancient ruins overlooking dramatic valleys, each location offers a unique perspective on the area’s past.
We’ve found that these sites are best enjoyed at a slower pace, taking time to appreciate the architecture, scenery and discovering their stories.
Exploring these places also provides an opportunity to discover lesser-known corners of the Peak District, where local history can often be found beyond the region’s most famous walking routes and viewpoints.

Thornbridge Hall
Thornbridge Hall is a historic estate in Derbyshire which is surrounded by landscaped gardens and open parkland that feels especially vibrant during the spring months.
We’ve found it to be at its most colourful at this time of year, when blossoming trees and fresh planting bring new life to the grounds, creating a peaceful contrast to the rugged landscapes found elsewhere in the Peak District.
It’s an ideal place for a day visit, with beautifully maintained gardens, seasonal colour, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the estate.
