Explore Peak District
Caves
The Peak District National Park is home to some of the UK’s most distinctive limestone landscapes, with caves and rocky valleys shaped over thousands of years by water moving through the region’s underground geology.
From well-known dramatic natural entrances to quieter limestone formations, these landscapes offer a very different experience to the open moorland and gritstone edges more commonly associated with rest of the national park.
Many of the region’s caves sit within wider walking routes and dales landscapes, where steep valley sides, exposed limestone, and changing conditions create some of the most atmospheric scenery in the Peak District.
Exploring The Caves Of The Peak District
The caverns and limestone valleys of the Peak District are often defined by contrasts, where exposed rock formations, narrow valleys and underground rivers combine to create landscapes that feel so different from the surrounding moors.
Through our adventures we’ve found these areas to be even more rewarding when explored slowly on foot and taking the time to appreciate the scale of the scenery.
Mosts of the routes include uneven footing and steep pathways which adds to the sense of exploration.

Thor’s Cave
Thor’s Cave is easily one of the most recognisable formations in the Peak District, set high above the Manifold Valley within a dramatic limestone landscape that’s beautiful year round.
We’ve found the approach is just as rewarding as the cave itself, with valley views and riverside walks. Take your time to explore both the surrounding valley and cave to fully appreciate this stunning area.

Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints!
The Peak District’s cave landscapes are often fragile and environmentally sensitive, with uneven terrain, delicate limestone features, and important wildlife habitats throughout the area. Please follow Leave No Trace principles by sticking to established paths where possible, taking all litter home, respecting farmland and wildlife, and helping preserve these landscapes so they can be enjoyed by future visitors.
