Yorkshire Caves
Yorkshire is home to some of England’s most fascinating cave landscapes, from natural caverns carved through limestone to historic sites shaped by centuries of local history and folklore.
Found across valleys, woodlands and limestone countryside, these caves offer a unique way to experience the region’s geology and heritage while exploring some of Yorkshire’s most distinctive landscapes.
Whether you’re visiting a famous attraction or discovering a lesser-known natural feature, Yorkshire’s caves provide an opportunity to explore a hidden side of the county that exists beneath and within the landscape itself.

Mother Shipton’s Cave
Mother Shipton’s Cave is one of Yorkshire’s most unusual natural attractions, set within woodland beside the River Nidd at Knaresborough and closely connected with the legendary Yorkshire prophetess Mother Shipton.
As autumn arrives, the surrounding woodland takes on a rich mix of seasonal colour, with golden leaves and the flowing River Nidd creating an atmospheric setting around the cave and nearby Petrifying Well. It’s a particularly evocative time to explore the attraction, when the changing woodland adds to the sense of history and folklore that surrounds this fascinating place.

Exploring The Caves Of Yorkshire
Yorkshire’s cave landscapes have been shaped over thousands of years by the movement of water through limestone rock, creating a network of caverns, passages, and natural formations.
We’ve found that many cave locations offer much more than the cave itself, often sitting within beautiful valleys, woodlands and walking routes that add to the overall experience.
From natural limestone formations to historic cave attractions, each location tells its own story and offers something unique to discover.
