Explore Peak District
Picturesque Villages
The Peak District is home to a collection of picturesque villages, where stone cottages, quiet lanes and surrounding countryside create some of the most charming and characterful settlements in the region.
Often nestled within valleys or set along winding rural roads, these villages offer a slower, more traditional perspective on life in and around the national park.
Whether used as a base for exploring nearby walks or visited as part of a wider journey through the Peak District, these villages provide a strong sense of heritage, community and rural identity.
Exploring The Picturesque Villages Of The Peak District
The villages scattered across the Peak District have developed over centuries, shaped by farming, local industry and their relationship with the surrounding landscape.
We’ve found them to be particularly rewarding to explore on foot, where stone-built streets and village traditions reveal a quieter side of the region that often sits just beyond the more dramatic landscapes.
Each village has its own character, from tucked-away hamlets in secluded valleys to more well-known settlements that act as gateways to nearby walks and viewpoints.

Castleton
Castleton is one of the most scenic villages in the Peak District, set within the Hope Valley and surrounded by dramatic limestone hills and striking viewpoints.
We’ve found it to be especially atmospheric when explored on foot, where narrow streets, traditional stone buildings, and nearby walking paths all connect the village to the surrounding landscape.
It’s a place that combines natural scenery with strong local character, making it a popular but rewarding base for exploring the wider area.
