What to expect

Foolow is a small village centred around an attractive green and duck pond, with traditional limestone cottages, historic buildings and dry-stone walls giving it a quintessential White Peak character. The village is recognised as an important example of a picturesque Peak District settlement, with its buildings closely grouped around the central green.

The village cross, which stands prominently on the green, has medieval origins and was moved to its present position in 1868. Nearby, the tiny Church of St Hugh was originally a smithy before being converted into a church in the late 19th century. The former Wesleyan Reform Chapel, dating from 1836, is another distinctive historic building within the village.

Foolow was historically associated with lead mining, with mining activity helping the village grow during the 18th century before the industry declined. Today, the surrounding landscape of limestone fields, dry-stone walls and gently rolling hills provides a peaceful setting for exploring the village and its rural surroundings.
