Explore Peak District
Woodlands & Forests
The woodlands and forests of the Peak District offer a quieter side to the national park, where winding trails, ancient trees and seasonal colour create landscapes that feel distinctly different from the open moorland and exposed ridges found elsewhere in the region.
From peaceful woodlands rich in wildlife to larger forest plantations with miles of walking routes, these landscapes provide opportunities to slow down, explore and experience nature at a gentler pace.
Whether you’re visiting for a short woodland stroll, a longer forest walk or simply to enjoy the changing seasons, the Peak District’s woodlands and forests are some of the most rewarding places to spend time outdoors.
Exploring The Woodlands & Forests Of The Peak District
Woodland landscapes change dramatically throughout the year, with each season bringing a different character to the forest.
We’ve found these locations to be particularly atmospheric during spring and autumn, when bluebells, fresh greenery, golden leaves and softer light transform the surroundings. Even on quieter days, the shelter provided by woodland can create a sense of calm that is often absent from the more exposed areas of the Peak District.
From ancient woodland remnants to larger managed forests, these landscapes provide valuable habitats for wildlife while offering some of the most peaceful walking routes in the national park.

Padley Gorge
Padley Gorge is one of the most atmospheric woodland landscapes in the Peak District, where ancient trees, flowing water and winding footpaths create a landscape that feels both wild and tranquil.
We’ve found it to be especially rewarding during the autumn, when fresh vibrant seasonal colour transforms the gorge and its surrounding woodland.
Whether visiting for photography, wildlife or a peaceful walk beneath the trees, Padley Gorge offers one of the finest woodland experiences in the Peak District.
