What to expect

The valley follows the course of the River Rivelin, one of Sheffield’s fastest-flowing rivers, which has shaped both the landscape and the city’s industrial history for centuries. During the Industrial Revolution, more than twenty water-powered mills operated along the valley, producing cutlery, tools and steel products that helped establish Sheffield’s global reputation. Today, many of the mill ponds, goits and remnants of these historic industries can still be seen along the riverside paths.

One of the most popular areas to explore is the Rivelin Valley Nature Trail, a scenic route that follows the river through woodland and past a series of small waterfalls, weirs and historic features. The valley is also home to Rivelin Dams, open green spaces, picnic spots and family-friendly walking routes, making it accessible to visitors of all ages.

Wildlife thrives throughout the valley, with kingfishers, dippers, grey wagtails and herons regularly spotted along the river. Ancient woodland provides habitat for a variety of birds, insects and mammals, while spring carpets of wild garlic and bluebells add colour to the landscape.
