Rivelin Dams, also known as Rivelin Reservoir, is a peaceful beauty spot on the western edge of Sheffield, where two historic reservoirs sit amongst ancient woodland and the picturesque Rivelin Valley.
Originally constructed to help supply water to the growing city during the 19th century, the dams are now a popular destination for walkers, photographers, families and wildlife enthusiasts.
Whether you’re enjoying a gentle woodland stroll, spotting ducks and dragonflies on the water or using the dams as the starting point for a longer walk into the Peak District, Rivelin Dams is one of Sheffield’s most tranquil outdoor spaces.

What to expect
Rivelin Dams consists of Upper Dam and Lower Dam, two reservoirs constructed during the 1800s as part of Sheffield’s expanding water supply network. Today, the reservoirs provide a peaceful setting surrounded by mature woodland, with easy walking paths that make the area suitable for visitors of all ages.
The dams form part of the wider Rivelin Valley, an area rich in industrial history. The fast-flowing River Rivelin once powered more than twenty water mills, supplying energy to Sheffield’s world-famous cutlery and steel industries. Many of these historic mill sites can still be discovered along nearby walking routes, adding another layer of interest to a visit.
We’ve found Rivelin Dams to be one of Sheffield’s most relaxing places to visit. The calm waters, surrounding woodland and rich industrial heritage make it an excellent destination for a peaceful walk at any time of year.
