What to expect

Stanage Edge is formed from millstone grit, a distinctive sandstone that has shaped much of the Dark Peak landscape. The escarpment stretches for around four miles, with dramatic cliffs rising above the moorland and numerous gritstone formations creating a constantly changing landscape along the route.

The walk along the top is relatively straightforward in good conditions, although the terrain is rocky and uneven in places. From the edge, expansive views stretch across the Hope Valley towards Win Hill, Lose Hill and the surrounding hills, while the distinctive outline of Mam Tor can be seen in the distance. The elevated position also makes Stanage a spectacular place to watch the changing light across the landscape.

Stanage Edge is internationally recognised as a climbing destination, with hundreds of gritstone routes ranging from short bouldering problems to challenging climbs. Even if you’re not a climber, watching climbers tackle the famous rock faces adds to the atmosphere, while the surrounding moorland provides plenty of space to simply walk, explore and enjoy the scenery.
