If there’s one walk we’d absolutely recommend for experiencing autumn in the Peak District, it’s Wyming Brook Nature Reserve. On the very edge of Sheffield – South Yorkshire, this beautiful woodland valley feels a world away from the everyday, with tumbling water, moss-covered rocks and winding paths beneath a blanket of trees.

As autumn arrives, fallen leaves cover the woodland floor and the changing colours bring even more character to this already atmospheric spot. Our favourite way to explore is a circular walk that follows the brook towards Rivelin Dams before returning through the surrounding woodland.

It’s a wonderful little adventure for anyone who loves woodland walks, photography and discovering the quieter side of the Peak District.

Wyming Brook Circular Walk

  • Starting point: Wyming Brook car park, Redmires Road, Sheffield, S10 4QX
  • Route: Circular route starting and ending at the car park.
  • Distance: Approximately 2.5 miles, depending on the paths taken.
  • Time: Allow around 2 hours, longer if stopping for photographs.
  • Difficulty: Moderate, with uneven woodland paths, steps and some slippery sections – decent boots/walking shoes recommended.
  • Parking: Free car park off Redmires Road.
  • Facilities: No toilets or visitor facilities at the reserve.

Starting the Walk at Wyming Brook Car Park

Begin at the car park off Redmires Road, just past Soughley Lane. Parking is free (at the time of publishing – please do always check when you arrive). It’s a small – medium size car park so we’d recommend arriving early to secure a space.

From here, head into Wyming Brook Nature Reserve and where the path splits, take the right hand route down towards the brook. You should see an opening with stepping stones heading across the brook.

Take your time as you follow the brook. There are plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs, especially when autumn leaves gather around the water and the stream tumbles over the rocks.

The riverside path is uneven in places, with steps, bridges and potentially muddy ground, so sturdy walking shoes or boots is an absolute must!

Following the Brook to Rivelin Dams

Eventually, the route brings you out towards the Rivelin Dams, a set of reservoirs where the scenery opens up and offers contrast to the enclosed woodland. With picnic spot, boot cleaners and litter bins located at the car park on the south east side of the reservoirs, this is a great point to pause before heading back into the trees.

(Taken in summer, I forgot to take one last autumn – just imagine less green & more autumnal colours…)

Returning Through Wyming Brook Woodland

Once you’re all rested and that meal deal is devoured, head back along Wyming Brook Drive sticking to the path, rather than retracing the route back following the brook.

The woodland offers a different perspective on the landscape, with tall trees, twisting roots and glimpses of the Rivelin Valley along the way. In autumn, the mix of evergreen trees and brightly colour foliage makes this section just as rewarding as the walk beside the water.

Keep an eye out for birds and other wildlife as you make your way back. Wyming Brook is a valuable nature reserve, so quiet walking and giving wildlife plenty of space help protect the place that makes this walk so special.

Follow the paths back towards the Redmires Road car park to complete your circular walk.
