What to expect

Redmires Reservoirs consists of three connected reservoirs – Upper Redmires, Middle Redmires and Lower Redmires – surrounded by open moorland and rugged countryside. The reservoirs were constructed in the 19th century as part of Sheffield’s expanding water supply network, with the impressive stone dam walls and surrounding landscape still reflecting the area’s industrial heritage.

The area offers a variety of walking routes, from a simple circuit around the reservoirs to longer routes connecting with Stanage Edge, Burbage Valley, Ringinglow and the wider Peak District. The open landscape provides excellent views towards the surrounding hills, while the quieter atmosphere makes it a popular location for photography, birdwatching and enjoying the changing seasons.

Wildlife is abundant around the reservoirs, with moorland birds, waterfowl and other species making the area their home. The surrounding heather and grasslands are particularly beautiful in late summer when the landscape takes on its distinctive purple colour.

We’ve found Redmires Reservoirs to be one of Sheffield’s most underrated outdoor spaces. It offers the beauty and tranquillity of the Peak District while remaining easily accessible from the city, making it a perfect destination for a short escape into nature.
