What to expect

Snake Woodland follows the course of the River Ashop through a steep-sided valley beneath the Dark Peak. The woodland is made up of native trees, rocky outcrops and moss-covered ground, creating a wild and atmospheric setting that feels a world away from the nearby road.

The river is one of the woodland’s defining features, with sections of fast-flowing water, small cascades and rocky banks providing plenty of opportunities for photography. In spring, woodland vegetation brings fresh colour to the valley, while autumn transforms the trees into shades of gold and orange.

The woodland can be explored through a network of paths and tracks, although conditions can be uneven, muddy and slippery, particularly after wet weather. Its remote character and dramatic surroundings make Snake Woodland an appealing destination for those who enjoy quieter walks and the wilder side of the Peak District.
