What to expect

Completed in 1943, Ladybower Reservoir is the largest of the three reservoirs in the Upper Derwent Valley and was built to meet the growing demand for drinking water across the East Midlands. Today, it is one of the Peak District’s most recognisable landmarks, famous for its two enormous bellmouth spillways, often referred to as the plugholes. These impressive Victorian-style structures become a spectacular sight when water levels are high enough for them to overflow.

The reservoir is surrounded by miles of well-maintained walking and cycling routes suitable for all abilities. Gentle waterside paths lead through woodland and open countryside, while more challenging routes climb the surrounding hills to viewpoints including Win Hill and Bamford Edge. The nearby Derwent Dam and Upper Derwent Valley provide even more opportunities for exploration, making Ladybower an excellent base for a full day outdoors.

We’ve found Ladybower Reservoir to be one of those places that never loses its appeal. Whether it’s an early morning mist rising from the water, the vibrant colours of autumn reflected across the reservoir, or the excitement of seeing the plugholes in full flow after heavy rain, every visit offers something different. It’s a destination that perfectly showcases the beauty and diversity of the Peak District.
