Kinder Scout
Derbyshire
Kinder Scout is the highest point in the Peak District and one of Britain’s most iconic upland landscapes. Rising to 636 metres (2,087 feet) above sea level, this vast gritstone plateau is renowned for its dramatic rock formations, sweeping moorland, hidden waterfalls and rich history.
As the birthplace of the famous Kinder Mass Trespass in 1932, Kinder Scout also played a pivotal role in shaping public access to the countryside.
Whether you’re tackling one of its famous hiking routes, standing beside Kinder Downfall, or exploring its rugged edges and secluded cloughs, Kinder Scout offers one of the most rewarding outdoor experiences in the Peak District National Park.

Visitor Information
Practical details to help plan your visit to Kinder Scout and the surrounding Peak District landscapes.

What to expect
Kinder Scout is unlike any other landscape in the Peak District. Rather than a single summit, it is a vast plateau of gritstone, peat bogs, dramatic escarpments, and weathered rock formations stretching for several miles. Walkers are rewarded with breathtaking views across the Hope Valley, the Upper Derwent Valley, Manchester, and, on exceptionally clear days, as far as Snowdonia.
The plateau is home to many of the Peak District’s most famous landmarks, including Kinder Downfall, the park’s tallest waterfall, along with unique rock formations such as the Wool Packs and Pym Chair. Numerous routes lead onto Kinder Scout, each offering a different perspective of this remarkable landscape.
Kinder Scout is also one of the most historically significant places in British outdoor history. In 1932, the Kinder Mass Trespass saw hundreds of walkers campaign for greater access to the countryside, an event that helped pave the way for the creation of Britain’s National Parks and today’s extensive network of public footpaths.
We’ve found Kinder Scout to be one of the UK’s greatest hiking destinations. Every visit feels different, with ever-changing weather, dramatic skies, and expansive views creating an unforgettable experience. The terrain can be challenging, however, and the plateau is known for its rapidly changing conditions, making suitable clothing, sturdy footwear, and confident navigation essential.
