What to expect

Kinder Downfall is one of the Peak District’s most spectacular natural features. Fed by the River Kinder, the waterfall plunges over the western edge of Kinder Scout before descending into the valley below. Following prolonged rainfall, the falls become particularly powerful, while strong winds can blow the cascading water back towards the plateau. This creates the famous “reverse waterfall” that has made Kinder Downfall one of the UK’s most photographed waterfalls.

Reaching the waterfall requires a rewarding hike across Kinder Scout, England’s largest area of upland moorland. Popular routes begin from Hayfield via William Clough or Edale via Grindsbrook Clough and the Pennine Way. Walkers are treated to expansive views, fascinating gritstone formations, peat bogs, and some of the wildest scenery in the Peak District National Park.

We’ve found Kinder Downfall to be one of those places where the journey is every bit as memorable as the destination. The combination of dramatic moorland, ever-changing weather, and the sight of England’s highest upland waterfall makes it an unforgettable experience. As the plateau can be exposed in all seasons, sturdy footwear, appropriate clothing, and good navigation skills are essential.
