Edensor has a fascinating history that sets it apart from many other Peak District villages. During the 19th century, the original settlement was carefully relocated by the 6th Duke of Devonshire to improve the views from Chatsworth House. The rebuilt village was designed with individually styled cottages, meaning almost every home has its own unique appearance while still blending harmoniously into the surrounding landscape.
At the heart of the village lies the attractive green, overlooked by St Peter’s Church, where generations of the Cavendish family are buried. Visitors can wander the quiet lanes, admire the beautifully maintained gardens, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere that makes Edensor feel largely untouched by time. Its close proximity to Chatsworth House also makes it an ideal addition to a day exploring one of the Peak District’s most famous estates.
We’ve found Edensor to be one of the Peak District’s hidden gems. While many visitors head straight to Chatsworth House, taking time to explore the village reveals a quieter side of the estate, with beautiful architecture, rich history, and a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere that rewards a slower pace.
