What to expect
Hathersage has a distinctly traditional Peak District character, with stone buildings, a village centre lined with independent businesses and a strong connection to the surrounding countryside. The village has long been associated with the local needle-making industry, while its position in the Hope Valley has helped establish it as a popular base for exploring the Peak District.
The village churchyard contains the reputed grave of Little John, the legendary companion of Robin Hood. Hathersage also has literary connections to Charlotte Brontë, who visited the village in 1845 and drew inspiration from the area for Jane Eyre. Nearby North Lees Hall is traditionally associated with the inspiration for Thornfield Hall.
Hathersage is well suited to visitors who want to combine a village visit with outdoor activities. Walking routes lead into the surrounding hills and valleys, while the village’s railway station makes it particularly convenient to visit without a car.
