Millstone Edge is a dramatic gritstone escarpment sitting above Hathersage on the eastern edge of the Peak District National Park.
Offering far-reaching views across the Hope Valley, Millstone Edge sits right on the edge of the South Yorkshire/Derbyshire border. Less well known than nearby Stanage Edge, the escarpment provides the same rugged Peak District scenery but with a quieter, more peaceful atmosphere.
Whether you’re enjoying a gentle walk along the edge, exploring the surrounding heather moorland, or taking in the panoramic views, Millstone Edge is a rewarding destination for walkers, photographers and nature lovers throughout the year.

What to expect
Millstone Edge forms part of the eastern gritstone edges that define the Peak District’s landscape. The escarpment stretches above Hope Valley, with rugged sandstone outcrops providing spectacular viewpoints across Hathersage, Hope Valley and the surrounding countryside. Despite being close to popular locations such as Surprise View, the edge often feels surprisingly peaceful.
A network of well-maintained footpaths links Millstone Edge with nearby landmarks including Burbage Valley, Lawrencefield Quarry, Higger Tor, Mother Cap and Stanage Edge, making it an excellent addition to a longer circular walk. The surrounding moorland is also rich in wildlife, with curlew, meadow pipits and birds of prey regularly seen throughout the year.
We’ve found Millstone Edge to be one of the Peak District’s hidden highlights. The combination of dramatic gritstone scenery, quieter walking routes and incredible panoramic views makes it an excellent alternative to some of the national park’s busier locations while still delivering everything people love about the Dark Peak.
