Visitor Information
Practical details to help plan your visit to Hope and the surrounding Peak District landscapes.

What to expect
Hope is an ancient settlement whose history stretches back well before the modern village. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, while the present St Peter’s Church dates largely from the 13th century and contains several fascinating historic features, including a Norman font and distinctive gargoyles.
The village grew around important historic routes through the Hope Valley and later developed as an agricultural community. The arrival of the Midland Railway in the 1890s helped bring more visitors to the area, with the railway making the surrounding Peak District increasingly accessible from Sheffield and Manchester.
Today, Hope retains a traditional village character, with stone buildings, a village green, independent businesses and historic landmarks including the remains of Hope Castle’s medieval motte. Its position at the meeting point of the River Noe and Peakshole Water also gives the village a particularly attractive setting.
