What to expect

The highlight of the attraction is the Petrifying Well, one of only a handful of naturally petrifying wells in the world. Rich in dissolved minerals, the water coats objects over time, gradually encasing them in stone. Teddy bears, hats, boots and even bicycles suspended beneath the flowing water demonstrate this remarkable natural phenomenon, making it one of Yorkshire’s most unusual geological attractions.

Just a short walk away lies Mother Shipton’s Cave, traditionally believed to be the birthplace of Ursula Southeil, better known as Mother Shipton, who is said to have been born around 1488.
