What to expect

York’s history stretches back almost 2,000 years, with the city playing an important role during the Roman, Viking and medieval periods. Reminders of this past can be found throughout the city, from the remains of Roman fortifications to the Viking heritage explored at JORVIK Viking Centre and the medieval buildings that line the historic streets.

The magnificent York Minster dominates the city centre and is one of the most recognisable Gothic cathedrals in England. Around it, the medieval Shambles, historic city walls and numerous ancient streets create an exceptionally atmospheric setting. The city also has an impressive collection of museums, including the National Railway Museum, York Castle Museum and the Yorkshire Museum.

Beyond its historic centre, York offers a greener side through riverside paths, parks and gardens. The River Ouse provides pleasant walking routes through and beyond the centre, while the city’s compact layout means many major attractions can be reached easily on foot.
