What to expect

Knaresborough’s history stretches back to Norman times, with the impressive ruins of Knaresborough Castleoverlooking one of Yorkshire’s most photographed views. From the castle grounds, visitors can enjoy panoramic views across the River Nidd, the famous railway viaduct, and the colourful houses that line the opposite bank. The town’s medieval streets are filled with independent shops, cafés, and historic pubs, making it a wonderful place to explore on foot.

The riverside is the heart of Knaresborough, where visitors can hire traditional rowing boats during the warmer months, enjoy peaceful walks along the riverbank, or relax in one of the waterside cafés. Just a short walk away is Mother Shipton’s Cave, England’s oldest visitor attraction, famous for its legendary prophetess, petrifying well, and woodland gardens.

We’ve found Knaresborough to be one of Yorkshire’s most complete day-out destinations. It combines stunning scenery, fascinating history, family-friendly attractions, and a welcoming atmosphere that makes it equally enjoyable whether you’re visiting for a few hours or spending an entire weekend exploring the surrounding area.
