What to expect

Nan Tor Cave sits within a prominent limestone outcrop overlooking Wetton Mill and the River Manifold. Although much smaller than the famous Thor’s Cave further along the valley, its elevated position provides wonderful views across the surrounding countryside. The short climb to the cave is steep in places but rewards visitors with a peaceful setting that is often overlooked by those exploring the area.

The cave itself is relatively small and shallow, making it suitable for a quick look rather than a lengthy exploration. Archaeological studies suggest the cave and surrounding outcrop may have been used by people for thousands of years, while the surrounding limestone contains several smaller cave systems that have been recorded by cavers and archaeologists. Today, Nan Tor forms part of a nationally important limestone landscape managed for both its geological and ecological significance.

We’ve found Nan Tor Cave to be one of those places that rewards curiosity. It may not have the size or fame of nearby Thor’s Cave, but its peaceful atmosphere, impressive views and fascinating history make it an excellent addition to any walk through the Manifold Valley.
