What to expect
Managed by the National Trust, Dovedale is one of the Peak District’s most iconic landscapes, shaped over millions of years by the River Dove carving its way through the White Peak’s limestone hills. The valley is famous for its picturesque stepping stones, which allow visitors to cross the river beneath dramatic cliffs, creating one of the most photographed scenes in the national park.
The riverside trail is relatively gentle and suitable for most visitors, following the River Dove through a landscape rich in wildlife, woodland, and striking geological features. Along the route you’ll encounter landmarks such as Lover’s Leap, Reynard’s Cave, and the impressive limestone pinnacle known as Ilam Rock, while more challenging walks lead to the summit of Thorpe Cloud for breathtaking panoramic views.
We’ve found Dovedale to be a destination that rewards repeat visits throughout the year. Spring brings carpets of wildflowers and fresh woodland colours, summer offers peaceful riverside walks, autumn transforms the valley with golden foliage, and winter often creates a beautifully tranquil atmosphere. Arriving early in the day is highly recommended, particularly during weekends and school holidays when the stepping stones become especially popular.
