What to expect
Thor’s Cave is a natural limestone cavern with an enormous entrance measuring around 18 metres high and 60 metres wide. The cave was formed through the erosion of limestone over thousands of years and contains a series of chambers extending deep into the hillside. Its impressive scale makes the entrance particularly striking when viewed from the surrounding valley.
The cave can be reached by a steep footpath climbing through woodland from the Manifold Valley. The final approach involves uneven and rocky ground, and the cave floor can be slippery, particularly after wet weather. Inside, the cavern becomes dark and uneven, so a torch and suitable footwear are recommended if you want to explore beyond the entrance.
From the mouth of the cave, visitors are rewarded with spectacular views across the Manifold Valley, with the surrounding limestone hills and woodland creating a dramatic natural setting. The combination of the enormous cavern, challenging approach and elevated viewpoint makes Thor’s Cave one of the Peak District’s most memorable natural attractions.
