Exploring Haddon Hall
What to expect
Dating back to the 12th century, Haddon Hall is widely regarded as one of the best-preserved medieval manor houses in Britain. Unlike many stately homes that were extensively remodelled, Haddon escaped major alteration for nearly 200 years after the family moved away in the early 18th century. As a result, visitors experience an exceptionally authentic collection of medieval, Tudor and Elizabethan architecture, complete with original timber beams, stone floors, historic tapestries and magnificent period rooms.
Outside, the beautifully restored Elizabethan terraced gardens are every bit as impressive as the house itself. Carefully landscaped across the hillside above the River Wye, the gardens feature colourful herbaceous borders, ancient yew hedges, fountains, terraces and far-reaching views across the Derbyshire countryside. Throughout the year they provide a spectacular backdrop to one of England’s finest historic homes.
We’ve found Haddon Hall to have a wonderfully different atmosphere from many grand country houses. Rather than feeling like a museum, it feels like a home frozen in time. Every room, courtyard and garden reveals another piece of its remarkable story, making it one of the Peak District’s essential historic attractions and a place that’s easy to revisit in every season.
