Visitor Information
Practical details to help plan your visit to Lawrencefield Quarry and the surrounding Peak District landscapes.

What to expect
Once an active gritstone quarry supplying building stone for the surrounding area, Lawrencefield Quarry has gradually been reclaimed by nature. Today, the quarry’s steep rock faces, flooded pools and mature woodland create one of the most atmospheric landscapes in the Peak District. On calm days, the still water reflects the surrounding cliffs and trees, making it a particularly popular location for photographers.
A network of well-maintained woodland paths connects Lawrencefield Quarry with nearby Padley Gorge, Surprise View, Over Owler Tor, and Higger Tor, making it an excellent addition to a longer walk. The exposed gritstone cliffs are also popular with experienced climbers, while the peaceful woodland setting provides opportunities to spot woodland birds, wildflowers and fungi throughout the seasons.
We’ve found Lawrencefield Quarry to be one of the Peak District’s hidden gems. Despite being just a short walk from several popular beauty spots, it often feels remarkably tranquil. The combination of industrial history, dramatic scenery and peaceful woodland makes it a fascinating place to explore and one that’s well worth adding to any walk.

Lawrencefield Quarry is a special place for both people and wildlife. Please help keep it that way by following the Leave No Trace principles: stay on established paths where possible, take all litter home, leave plants, rocks and wildlife undisturbed, keep dogs under close control around wildlife, and take extra care around the quarry’s steep rock faces and deep water.
