What to expect

Completed in 1912, Howden Reservoir forms the uppermost reservoir in the Upper Derwent Valley, sitting above Derwent Reservoir and below the wild moorlands of the Dark Peak. Together, the reservoirs create one of the most scenic landscapes in the Peak District, with quiet waters reflecting the surrounding hills and forests throughout the year.

The route from Fairholmes to Howden Reservoir follows a wide, largely traffic-free road that is popular with walkers, cyclists, and families. Along the way, you’ll enjoy ever-changing views across the reservoirs before reaching the impressive Howden Dam, where the valley narrows beneath the surrounding hills. For those looking for a longer adventure, footpaths continue beyond the reservoir towards Derwent Edge, the Alport Valley, and some of the Peak District’s most remote moorland landscapes.

We’ve found Howden Reservoir to be one of the most relaxing places to visit in the national park. While nearby Ladybower often attracts the crowds, Howden feels noticeably quieter, making it ideal for peaceful walks, wildlife watching, photography, or simply enjoying the spectacular scenery of the Upper Derwent Valley.
