What to expect
Helmsley’s history stretches back more than 900 years, and its compact town centre is packed with historic buildings, independent businesses, and inviting places to eat and drink. The impressive ruins of Helmsley Castle, managed by English Heritage, dominate the western edge of the town and tell the story of centuries of conflict, power, and aristocratic life. Just beyond the castle lies the beautiful Helmsley Walled Garden, a beautifully restored five-acre garden that has become one of Yorkshire’s horticultural highlights.
The town is also an ideal base for exploring the surrounding countryside. It sits on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and the Cleveland Way National Trail, making it popular with walkers and cyclists.
We’ve found Helmsley to be one of Yorkshire’s most complete market towns. It combines fascinating history, outstanding visitor attractions, excellent independent businesses, and easy access to some of England’s finest countryside, making it equally suited to a relaxed afternoon or a longer stay exploring the North York Moors.
