What to expect

Often described as the “Dragon’s Back” due to its distinctive series of limestone ridges, Chrome Hill is unlike anywhere else in the Peak District. The steep climb to the summit is relatively short but rewards visitors with far-reaching views across the White Peak, neighbouring Parkhouse Hill, and the rolling Derbyshire countryside.

The surrounding landscape is characterised by quiet valleys, limestone pastures, and traditional dry stone walls, offering a more peaceful alternative to some of the national park’s busier walking destinations. The route to the summit is steep in places and can become slippery after rain, but the dramatic scenery makes the effort worthwhile.

We’ve found Chrome Hill to be particularly impressive during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset, when the low light emphasises the hill’s distinctive ridgeline and the surrounding landscape glows with warm colour. It’s a location that feels wild, remote, and unmistakably Peak District.
