What to expect

The Roaches is a dramatic gritstone escarpment rising above the Staffordshire Moorlands. Its weathered cliffs and distinctive rock formations create a rugged landscape that has become one of the Peak District’s best-known climbing and walking destinations. The ridge reaches around 505 metres at its highest point, providing extensive views across the surrounding countryside.

Walking along the ridge involves a mixture of rocky paths, open moorland and exposed sections, with numerous viewpoints along the way. The cliffs are home to a range of wildlife, including peregrine falcons, while the surrounding moorland provides habitat for mountain hares, red grouse and other upland species. The area is also famous for stories of a colony of wallabies that was introduced in the 1930s and is occasionally still reported, although sightings are now extremely rare.

The landscape can feel particularly wild in poor weather, with strong winds, rain and low cloud changing the character of the ridge quickly. In clearer conditions, however, the views are exceptional, stretching across the Staffordshire Moorlands towards the Cheshire Plain and surrounding Peak District hills. The combination of dramatic rock scenery, wildlife and open moorland makes The Roaches one of the region’s most rewarding places to explore.
