What to expect

Despite its name, Lud’s Church is not a church at all, but a spectacular natural fissure formed by a massive landslip many thousands of years ago. Stretching for around 100 metres and with rock walls rising up to 18 metres high, the narrow gorge creates its own cool, damp microclimate where mosses, ferns and lichens thrive. Even on warm summer days, the temperature inside the chasm can feel noticeably cooler than the surrounding woodland.

Lud’s Church has long been associated with local legend. It is believed to have been a secret place of worship for the Lollards, a religious movement persecuted during the 15th century. It has also been linked to the legend of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, with many believing the atmospheric gorge inspired scenes from the famous medieval poem. Whether or not the stories are true, they certainly add to the sense of mystery that surrounds the site.

We’ve found Lud’s Church to be one of the most magical places in the Peak District. The approach through ancient woodland builds anticipation before the towering sandstone walls suddenly appear, creating an experience unlike anywhere else in the national park. Combined with the peaceful surroundings of Gradbach, it’s a destination that feels wonderfully hidden despite its growing popularity.
