What to expect

Ramshaw Rocks is a spectacular line of weathered gritstone outcrops formed over millions of years by wind, rain and frost. The rocks rise dramatically above the surrounding landscape, creating an impressive natural viewpoint with sweeping vistas across the Staffordshire Moorlands, the Roaches, Hen Cloud and, on clear days, much of the southern Peak District.

The distinctive rock formations have long been popular with climbers, offering a range of traditional climbing routes on high-quality gritstone. Even if you’re not climbing, the escarpment is a wonderful place to explore on foot, with numerous rock towers, narrow passages and viewpoints to discover. Ramshaw Rocks is often combined with nearby The Roaches, Hen Cloud and Lud’s Church to create one of the Peak District’s most rewarding full-day walks.

We’ve found Ramshaw Rocks to be one of the Peak District’s hidden highlights. It offers all the drama of the national park’s famous gritstone edges but with a quieter, more remote feel, making it an ideal destination for those looking to escape the crowds.
