What to expect

Gordale Scar is one of the most spectacular examples of limestone scenery in Britain. The immense gorge is believed to have been formed by meltwater at the end of the last Ice Age, creating sheer limestone cliffs that tower above visitors on either side. At the head of the gorge, Gordale Beck cascades over a series of limestone steps, forming a dramatic waterfall that becomes especially impressive after prolonged rainfall.

The walk to Gordale Scar is relatively straightforward from Malham, following quiet countryside paths through one of the Yorkshire Dales’ most celebrated landscapes. Many visitors combine the gorge with nearby landmarks including Malham Cove, Janet’s Foss, and Malham Tarn, creating one of the finest circular walks in the national park.

We’ve found Gordale Scar to be one of those places that truly showcases the raw power of nature. Standing beneath the towering cliffs gives a real sense of scale, while the combination of geology, waterfalls and surrounding countryside makes it one of Yorkshire’s most unforgettable landscapes. The rocky ground near the waterfall can become slippery, so sturdy footwear is highly recommended.
