Malham Cove
North Yorkshire
Malham Cove is one of the Yorkshire Dales’ most spectacular natural landmarks, where a towering curved limestone cliff rises around 80 metres (260 feet) above the surrounding landscape.
Formed by the immense power of glacial meltwater thousands of years ago, the cove is now home to one of the UK’s finest limestone pavements and offers breathtaking views across the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Whether you’re standing beneath the impressive cliff face, climbing the famous stone steps to the summit, or exploring the unique limestone pavement above, Malham Cove is an unforgettable destination and one of Yorkshire’s must-visit natural wonders.

Visitor Information
Practical details to help plan your visit to Malham Cove and the surrounding areas.

What to expect
Malham Cove is one of Britain’s finest examples of a limestone amphitheatre. During the last Ice Age, torrents of glacial meltwater carved out the immense curved cliff that stands today. The waterfall that once flowed over the cove disappeared underground as the limestone eroded, leaving behind the dramatic rock face that has become one of Yorkshire’s most recognisable landscapes.
A climb of around 400 stone steps (probably the only difficult part of the Malham circular walk) leads to the top of the cove, where visitors are rewarded with spectacular views across the Yorkshire Dales and the remarkable limestone pavement. This rare geological feature consists of large limestone blocks, known as clints, separated by deep fissures called grikes, creating a unique habitat for specialised plants and wildlife. The limestone pavement also gained worldwide recognition after featuring in the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.
We’ve found Malham Cove to be one of Yorkshire’s most awe-inspiring places to visit. Standing beneath its towering cliff face is an unforgettable experience, while the panoramic views from the top make the climb more than worthwhile. Whether you’re visiting as part of the famous Malham Circular Walk or simply spending time exploring the cove itself, it’s a destination that perfectly captures the grandeur of the Yorkshire Dales.

Explore Responsibly
Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints!
Malham Cove is a special place for both people and wildlife. Please help keep it that way by following the Leave No Trace principles: stay on established paths where possible, take all litter home, leave plants, rocks and wildlife undisturbed, take extra care around the cliff edge and limestone pavement, and respect this nationally important landscape so everyone can enjoy it for years to come.
