What to expect

Janet’s Foss is a small but incredibly picturesque waterfall located along Gordale Beck, just a short walk from Malham village. The waterfall drops around 10 metres into a clear pool beneath a canopy of ancient ash woodland, creating a scene that feels almost magical. The name “Foss” comes from the Old Norse word for waterfall, reflecting the area’s Viking heritage.

According to local folklore, the waterfall is said to be home to Janet, the Queen of the Fairies, who was believed to live in a cave behind the falls. While the legends add to its charm, the true appeal of Janet’s Foss lies in its natural beauty, with moss-covered rocks, woodland trails, and the gentle sound of flowing water creating a peaceful atmosphere.

The walk to Janet’s Foss is one of the easiest and most rewarding in the Yorkshire Dales. Many visitors combine it with the nearby landmarks of Gordale Scar and Malham Cove, creating a spectacular circular route through some of Yorkshire’s most famous limestone landscapes.
