Horseshoe Quarry
Derbyshire
Horseshoe Quarry is a large disused limestone quarry near Stoney Middleton, known for its dramatic rock faces, climbing routes, interesting geology and growing wildlife habitats.
Once a working quarry, the site has been transformed into a popular outdoor destination, with limestone cliffs now surrounded by woodland, grassland and a wildlife pond. The quarry also forms part of the Peak District’s open-access landscape.
Whether you’re interested in climbing, geology, walking or simply exploring somewhere a little different, Horseshoe Quarry offers a fascinating glimpse into how former industrial landscapes can develop into valuable recreational and natural spaces.

What to expect
Horseshoe Quarry is a striking example of a former limestone quarry that has developed into a popular outdoor site. Large exposed rock faces dominate the landscape, while vegetation, woodland and natural habitats have gradually returned to parts of the quarry.
The quarry is particularly well known for sport climbing, with a large number of routes across several sections of the crag. It is regarded as one of the Peak District’s most popular climbing venues, although visitors who are not climbers can still appreciate the scale of the quarry and its unusual landscape.
There is also an important natural side to Horseshoe Quarry. Rewilding work has created and improved wildlife habitats, including a pond supporting great crested newts, while species such as bee orchids and badgers have also been recorded around the site. Fossilised coral can also be seen within the exposed limestone, offering an interesting reminder of the area’s geological history.
