Kelham Island
South Yorkshire
Kelham Island is one of Sheffield’s most distinctive historic neighbourhoods, where the city’s industrial heritage meets a thriving independent food, drink and creative scene.
Built around the River Don and its historic industrial waterways, the area once played an important role in Sheffield’s steelmaking and manufacturing industries. Today, former workshops and factories sit alongside independent cafés, traditional pubs, breweries, restaurants, galleries and striking street art.
Whether you’re exploring Sheffield’s industrial past, visiting the Kelham Island Museum, discovering independent businesses or enjoying a riverside wander, Kelham Island offers a fascinating mix of history and contemporary city life.

Practical details to help plan your visit to Kelham Island.

What to expect
Kelham Island’s character comes from its industrial past. Historic brick factories, workshops, old waterways and surviving industrial structures provide reminders of the manufacturing that helped make Sheffield internationally famous. The area has evolved considerably, with former industrial buildings now housing creative businesses, independent shops, galleries and places to eat and drink.
One of the main highlights is Kelham Island Museum, which explores Sheffield’s history of steelmaking, engineering and skilled craftsmanship. Its collections include the enormous River Don Engine, historic machinery, transport displays and Little Mesters Street, which recreates the workshops of traditional Sheffield craftspeople. The museum is free to enter, with donations encouraged, and the engine is normally demonstrated at scheduled times on selected days.
Beyond the museum, Kelham Island is known for its independent atmosphere. Visitors can browse street art, explore the riverside streets, stop at cafés and breweries or spend time at the area’s food and drink venues. It is an urban neighbourhood rather than a traditional countryside attraction, so expect paved streets, active businesses, residential buildings and occasional busy roads alongside its historic features.
