What to expect

Sheffield’s identity is deeply connected to its industrial heritage. The city’s location among fast-flowing rivers helped power waterwheels and mills, eventually supporting the development of its world-famous steel and cutlery industries. This history can still be seen throughout the city, particularly around Kelham Island, where former industrial buildings, waterways and heritage sites now sit alongside independent businesses, bars and restaurants.

Despite its industrial reputation, Sheffield is one of the UK’s greenest cities, with a huge amount of parks, woodland and open countryside within its boundaries. From Porter Valley to Rivelin Valley and Limb Valley, there are countless opportunities to escape the urban environment without travelling far. With nearly 1/3 of the city uniquely falling within the Peak District National Park boundary, making Sheffield an excellent base for exploring some of England’s most spectacular landscapes.

The city centre offers a contrasting experience, with landmarks including the Sheffield Cathedral, Millennium Gallery, Winter Garden and Peace Gardens surrounded by shops, cafés, restaurants and cultural venues. Sheffield’s strong independent scene gives different neighbourhoods their own character, while its universities and large student population contribute to a lively atmosphere throughout the year.
