What to expect

Moss Valley Woodlands is a tranquil network of ancient woodland, meadow and scrub following the Moss Brook and its tributaries. Mature beech and oak trees dominate the landscape, with a network of footpaths and bridleways allowing visitors to explore the reserve and connect with wider routes through the valley.

Spring and early summer are particularly impressive, when bluebells, wood anemone and sweet woodruff create colourful displays beneath the trees. Dowey Lumb, a small meadow within the reserve, is increasingly rich in wildflowers and provides a more open contrast to the surrounding woodland.

The reserve is also an important habitat for wildlife, with woodpeckers, yellowhammers, linnets, garden warblers, bullfinches and other woodland birds recorded in the area. Roe deer can also be seen, while standing dead trees provide valuable habitat for insects and other woodland species.
