The Great Ridge
Derbyshire
The Great Ridge is one of the Peak District’s most spectacular walking routes, forming a distinctive ridge between Mam Tor and Lose Hill above Hope Valley.
With a dramatic undulating skyline, exposed moorland and sweeping views in every direction, it is one of the most rewarding landscapes to explore in the Dark Peak.
Whether you’re tackling the full ridge walk or simply enjoying one of its many viewpoints, The Great Ridge offers an unforgettable combination of dramatic scenery, challenging terrain and classic Peak District landscapes.

Practical details to help plan your visit to The Great Ridge.

What to expect
The Great Ridge runs for around 3 miles between Mam Tor and Lose Hill, with a well-defined path passing over several prominent points including Hollins Cross. The route rises and falls repeatedly along the ridge, creating a satisfying sense of progression and providing constantly changing views across the surrounding landscape.
From the ridge, the Hope Valley stretches out below, surrounded by some of the Peak District’s most recognisable hills and valleys. Mam Tor dominates the western end, while Lose Hill provides an impressive eastern viewpoint. The elevated position means there are panoramic views in almost every direction, with the landscape changing dramatically as you move along the ridge.
Although the route is well established, it involves steep climbs, uneven stone paths and exposed sections where conditions can change quickly. Wind, rain and low cloud can make the ridge feel considerably more challenging, so suitable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are essential. On a clear day, however, the combination of dramatic scenery and rewarding walking makes The Great Ridge one of the Peak District’s classic experiences.

Explore Responsibly
Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints!
The Great Ridge is a popular and fragile moorland landscape that is particularly vulnerable to footpath erosion. Please help protect it by following the Leave No Trace principles: stay on established paths where possible, take all litter home, leave plants, rocks and wildlife undisturbed, keep dogs under close control around livestock and nesting birds, and respect other walkers and the surrounding countryside. Always park responsibly in designated parking areas and never block roads, gateways or access routes needed by residents, farmers or emergency service vehicles.
