What to expect

The Wainstones are a series of distinctive sandstone formations running along the ridge of Hasty Bank. Formed from the sandstone that characterises parts of the North York Moors, the rocks have been shaped by weathering into a collection of dramatic cliffs, ledges and boulders. Their exposed position gives them an unmistakable presence above the surrounding moorland.

A steep and rocky section of the Cleveland Way National Trail passes directly over the Wainstones, creating a memorable part of the long-distance route. Reaching the rocks involves a climb across open moorland, with uneven ground and sections requiring care as you scramble over or around the formations. From the ridge, there are expansive views across the Cleveland Hills and the surrounding North York Moors.

The Wainstones are particularly atmospheric when the heather is in bloom during late summer, while clear weather provides the best opportunity to appreciate the scale of the surrounding landscape. Conditions can change quickly on the exposed ridge, however, and low cloud, wind and rain can make the terrain considerably more challenging.
