What to expect

Roseberry Topping is instantly recognisable thanks to its unusual profile, created by a combination of geological processes and a major landslip in 1912 that dramatically altered the shape of the hillside. Although often compared to a miniature mountain, the summit is reached via well-maintained footpaths that climb steadily from the National Trust car park through woodland before tackling a steeper stone staircase near the top.

The summit rewards visitors with spectacular 360-degree views across North Yorkshire. From the top, you can appreciate the contrast between the rolling Cleveland Hills, the vast agricultural landscape of the Vale of Mowbray and the distant North Sea coastline. On exceptionally clear days, visibility extends for many miles, making it one of Yorkshire’s finest viewpoints.

Despite its popularity, Roseberry Topping retains a wonderfully wild feel. Heather-covered slopes, pockets of woodland and open grassland support a variety of wildlife throughout the year, while the ever-changing weather ensures no two visits feel quite the same.
