Goathland is one of North Yorkshire’s most picturesque villages, where heather-covered moorland, historic stone cottages, and steam trains combine to create a timeless destination in the heart of the North York Moors National Park.
The village is perhaps best known as the filming location for the fictional village of Aidensfield in the long-running television series Heartbeat, while its beautifully preserved railway station also appeared as Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter film.

What to expect
Goathland has become one of Yorkshire’s most recognisable villages thanks to its starring role as Aidensfield in ITV’s Heartbeat. Fans of the series can still visit familiar filming locations, including Aidensfield Garage, the village shops, and many of the streets that featured throughout the programme’s 18-year run.
The village is equally famous for Goathland Station, one of the most beautifully preserved stations on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. In 2001, it appeared as Hogsmeade Station in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, welcoming Harry Potter on his first journey to Hogwarts. Today, heritage steam trains continue to arrive throughout the season, making the station a highlight for railway enthusiasts and film fans alike.
Beyond its television and film connections, Goathland is surrounded by spectacular countryside. Walking routes lead across the North York Moors with countless footpaths across heather moorland, ancient woodland and quiet valleys. We’ve found Goathland to be one of those villages that perfectly combines history, scenery and nostalgia, making it an essential stop when exploring the North York Moors.
