What to expect

Robin Hood’s Bay has a fascinating history dating back hundreds of years. During the 18th century, the village became infamous for smuggling, with local stories telling of secret passages and hidden cellars used to move contraband such as tea, brandy and tobacco through the tightly packed cottages. While much of the folklore has grown over time, the village’s narrow lanes and historic buildings still evoke the atmosphere of its smuggling past.

The lower village is a delight to explore, with steep cobbled streets lined by traditional fishermen’s cottages, independent galleries, cafés and shops. Many of the buildings date back several centuries, creating one of the best-preserved historic villages on the Yorkshire coast. At low tide, the expansive beach reveals fascinating rock pools and wave-cut platforms that are internationally important for their Jurassic geology and fossil discoveries.

We’ve found Robin Hood’s Bay to be one of Yorkshire’s most captivating villages. Its rich history, spectacular coastal scenery and timeless character make it a place that’s just as rewarding to wander as it is to photograph.
