Overlooking the town, the ruins of Whitby Abbey provide one of Yorkshire’s most recognisable landmarks, while the narrow streets of the old town are filled with independent shops, cafés, pubs and historic buildings.
With its strong maritime heritage, connections to Captain Cook and Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and spectacular coastal setting, Whitby offers plenty to discover both within the town and along the surrounding coastline.

What to expect
Whitby’s historic harbour remains at the heart of the town, with fishing boats and pleasure vessels sharing the water alongside the busy quayside. The old town climbs steeply from the harbour, with narrow streets, historic buildings and independent shops creating a distinctive character.
The 199 Steps lead from the old town towards the Abbey Headland, where the ruins of Whitby Abbey stand above the coastline. The town’s maritime heritage can also be explored through attractions including the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, while Whitby’s connection with Bram Stoker’s Dracula has become an important part of its cultural identity.
Beyond the harbour, Whitby’s beaches and clifftop promenades provide opportunities to experience the Yorkshire coast, with views stretching along the dramatic shoreline. The town is also an excellent base for exploring the wider North York Moors and Heritage Coast.
