What to expect

The ruins of Whitby Abbey are the remains of a magnificent medieval Benedictine monastery, built on a headland that has been associated with religious settlements since the 7th century. The surviving Gothic architecture, particularly the soaring arches and intricate stonework, creates an impressive and atmospheric setting.

The visitor centre and museum explore the long history of the headland, including its Anglo-Saxon, medieval and later stories. Exhibits and interactive displays introduce visitors to figures including St Hild and Caedmon, as well as the legends and folklore associated with the site. The abbey’s connection to Bram Stoker’s Dracula is also explored, reflecting Whitby’s enduring association with the Gothic and supernatural.

The abbey grounds are largely open grassland, with paths and viewpoints providing panoramic views across Whitby, the harbour and the North Sea. Reaching the abbey directly from the town involves climbing the famous 199 Steps, although there is also road access to the clifftop entrance. Some areas of the grounds are uneven and exposed, and the stone and grass surfaces can become slippery when wet.
