What to expect

Wharncliffe Crags is a long stretch of exposed gritstone cliffs and rock formations overlooking the valley below. The weathered rock creates a series of ledges, outcrops and dramatic faces, with paths winding through the surrounding woodland and along the top of the escarpment.

The crags have an important place in the history of British climbing and were among the areas explored by early climbers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, climbers continue to use the natural rock faces, while walkers can enjoy the network of paths around the escarpment and woodland.

The elevated sections provide views across the surrounding South Yorkshire countryside, with the landscape changing considerably between the open rock faces and wooded areas. The terrain is uneven in places, and the edges of the crags can be steep and exposed, so care is needed, particularly in wet or icy conditions.
