What to expect

Wharncliffe Woods covers a large area of mixed woodland on the steep slopes above the River Don. The woods contain mature trees, rocky outcrops and a network of paths that wind through the landscape, with occasional clearings providing glimpses across the surrounding valley.

The woodland has a long association with the neighbouring Wharncliffe Crags, which rise dramatically above the trees. Gritstone boulders and rock formations can be found throughout the woods, adding variety to the landscape and reflecting the geology of the wider area.

The paths vary considerably, from relatively easy woodland tracks to steeper and more uneven sections on the hillsides. The terrain can become muddy following wet weather, while fallen branches, exposed roots and loose rocks can make some paths challenging. The woods are best explored at a relaxed pace, allowing time to appreciate the wildlife and changing character of the woodland.
